Thattu Vada, crisp chilli rice discs from Palakkad
Thattu vada from RINGS & ROLLS® is a crisp, flat rice-flour disc with a chilli kick, made fresh at our unit in Karippode, Palakkad. It comes in 200 g packets at ₹75, and you can mix it with our other Kerala snacks in a 9-packet Happiness Box.
What is thattu vada?
Thattu vada is a thin, crunchy, disc-shaped snack made mainly from rice flour and deep-fried. Thattu means plate, which describes its flat shape.
The same family of snacks is a deep-fried rice-flour snack from Tamil Nadu, flat and disc-shaped, and it is popular across South India and in Sri Lanka. Ours is Thattu Vada Chilly, seasoned for a gentle heat.
Is thattu vada the same as thattai or nippattu?
They are close cousins with different local names: it is called thattai in Tamil Nadu, nippattu in Karnataka and chekkalu in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. If you grew up with any of them, thattu vada will feel familiar.
What does your thattu vada taste like?
Ours is crisp and flat, with a chilli kick that makes it a favourite with evening tea. It is sturdier than murukku, so it also travels well.
